Keith’s story
Last November, my father-in-law, Keith Richards, unexpectedly passed away after being diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia. We had been advised that his condition was treatable, so losing him so suddenly has been incredibly difficult for our whole family.
Keith’s passing has left a massive hole in our hearts. My son, Chester, absolutely doted on his Bampa Chirpy and misses him every single day. Even writing this now is emotional, it’s hard to put into words just how much we have lost.
Keith was one of those people who would do absolutely anything for anyone. If you needed help, he was there, no questions asked. He would drop whatever he was doing to lend a hand, no matter the circumstances. He was a rock for his children and grandchildren, a source of strength for our entire family, and someone who taught us the importance of love, compassion and making the most of life.
His kindness and willingness to help others are a huge part of the legacy he leaves behind. I know that if Keith were here today, he would want us to keep supporting one another, enjoying life and being there for the people who need us.
What makes it even harder is knowing everything that Keith has been robbed of. He should still be here, enjoying the retirement he worked so hard for, spending time with his wife of 50 years, Linda, making memories with his children and watching his grandchildren grow up. There were so many more moments he deserved to have.
Fundraising in memory of Keith
That’s why taking on the Cardiff Half Marathon meant so much more to me than achieving a PB. I ran in memory of Keith, for the time he should still have had with us, and to raise as much money and awareness as possible for Cure Leukaemia.
I ran every step of the Cardiff Half Marathon for Keith, for Linda, for our family, and for all the families affected by blood cancer. I hope that by sharing his story, we can continue to raise awareness, support vital research and give more people the chance of a future that Keith should have had.
