Clem Bird – Representing Team GB
Former clinical trials nurse Clem Bird recently achieved a major milestone in her triathlon journey, representing Great Britain at the European Age-Group Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships.
Competing on Saturday 13th June, Clem secured a top-10 finish in her first-ever international race, crossing the line 10th out of 14 athletes despite challenging conditions and soaring temperatures.
Representing Great Britain had been a long-term goal, for Clem, she described the weekend as unforgettable. “I’m absolutely thrilled with a top-10 finish at my first ever international race. I’ve learned so much to take forward and met some incredible female athletes.”
The Swim
The championship began with a 750 metre open-water swim, but an unexpected rule change created an additional challenge before the race had even started. Due to the rising temperatures, wetsuits were prohibited for safety reasons.
“I was very nervous for the swim start. I usually swim in open water with a wetsuit on, so this was a complete first for me.”
Then came the “crazy mass start, arms and legs everywhere, everyone fighting for position.”
Despite the chaos, Clem emerged from the water in the middle of the field, putting herself in a strong position for the bike leg.
The Cycle
Then onto the 18.5 kilometre cycle. After a quick first transition, Clem successfully joined a small group of riders before the pack expanded as they caught competitors ahead.
“There were several attacks on the front and eventually one other rider and I managed to form a breakaway.”
The Run
By the time competitors reached the 5 kilometre run, temperatures had already climbed to 30°C.
For Clem, the run became about trying not to overheat, “all I could think was keep your head cool”.
“My legs have never been in so much pain running, but the incredible atmosphere kept me putting one foot in front of the other.”
Despite the soaring conditions, Clem crossed the finish line and all she could think about was “how much I wanted to do it all over again. I think the huge smile on my face in all the photos says it all.”
We are so honoured to have been featured on Clem’s kit and to be a small part of what is sure to be an incredible journey.
