Inspired by an incredible cycling challenge to raise money for charity, new cookbook Back in the Saddle is already gaining momentum after being selected to represent the UK at the Gourmand World Cookbook awards. Back in the Saddle has been selected to represent the UK across three categories; Culinary Travel, Food and Sport and Charity Cookbook, and will compete against cookbooks from 215 countries from across the globe later this spring.
Back in the Saddle sees chef Hayden Groves explore the European cuisine that helped fuel his Three Tours Challenge – completing the Giro D’Italia, the Tour de France and La Vuelta a España. It’s a feat that only 39 professional cyclists have ever completed before; a gruelling 10,403km ride over 63 days. This achievement has inspired Hayden’s Back in the Saddle book, which has 63 recipes that journey through the European cuisine that gave the amateur cyclists the fuel to finish. What’s more, 100% of proceeds from the cookbook will also be donated to blood cancer charity, Cure Leukaemia.
Known as the Oscars of the cookbook world, the Gourmand World Cookbook awards has selected Back in the Saddle as the winner to represent the UK in not one, but three categories - Culinary Travel, Food and Sport and Charity Cookbook. Three categories is the most of any cookbook in the UK this year in the competition. Back in the Saddle now goes on to compete with books from 215 countries across the world in the only international competition in the sector which will take place on May 26th and 27th this year.
Executive chef at BaxterStorey, the hospitality services provider that has also funded the book, Hayden Groves has created a unique journey through European cuisine, which can be attempted by cooks of all levels of expertise. With dishes such as Sardinian lemonade, mushroom arancini and Valencian-style paella, not to mention countless anecdotes of the team’s journey through the mountains, the book is jam-packed with excitement.
Speaking about the award, 2013 National Chef of the Year, Hayden said:
“I am absolutely thrilled that Back in the Saddle has been recognised by the Gourmand World Cookbook awards and will be representing the UK at the awards ceremony later this year.
I wanted to create this book not only because it allowed me to relive the amazing experience I had during the three tours challenge, but it also allows me to continue to support Cure Leukaemia, a charity whose work is so vital to saving lives across the UK.
